Themes

What does the Spirit do?

How do I receive the Spirit?

  • Last week Clare spoke about the Spirit being promised and how it can help us know God

Today I am continuing that talk and looking at What the Spirit does and How we can receive it.

God promised the Spirit in the Old testament and it was sent upon various people at various times to help them in a particular task. From making things to having strengh.

After Pentecost the Spirit was made available to all believers.

  • So when we receive the Spirit what does it do for us and in us?

When we give our life to Christ and decide to follow Him we receive the Spirit, as Clare said the Spirit of God.

You can think of that as like a night light always there.

It is there to remind you that you belong to the Light, Christ, rather then to the dark world.

It gives hope in the darkness, that is why so many children like to have a night light left on, to give them hope that they are not alone in the dark.

However often that light is left in its room as we go about our life, it is there a little reminder but nothing else. Used only when things get really dark for us.

However you can not read, go for a walk, or any other activity using this small light.

But the Spirit, the light, can do so much more.

  • That is what we will look at.

Night lights are nice and comforting but Jesus told us not to hide our light, well its hard to see a night light, but a floodlight now that shines out.

Jesus said “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'” John 7

Not just a trickle or a tap which only gave a bit now and then but a flowing river.

So what does this bright light this flowing river do?

The bible describes it as a river that brings life to the ground it flows over.

The light which shines out from a city for others to see

We have been singing lately my Light  House, a song about the light of Jesus being our guide in the storms of life, but that light or river in us does the same for others.

It can show the work of Jesus in our lives

  • Gifts of the Spirit

4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

1 Cor 12

There are many gifts, some are listed in our reading others in other places.

Each is there is help us show Jesus to others.

The Spirit Shows us JESUS

It allows us to experience God

Makes us more like Him

Some Empower, gives new life

“The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control.” Gal5

We saw at the beginning of this series how these are what people often see in Christians they know.

It starts transforming us into the person God made us to be.

Some Give power for service

Then there is “wise advice, special knowledge, great faith, gift of healing, performing miracles, ability to prophesy, discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. The Spirit also helps us understand the bible, Pray and many more things.

The Spirit can also Purify and Reveal

Helping a believer deal with issues in their life

By revealing Gods will and presence

Romans 5

3 We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. 4 And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. 5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.

The Spirit Guides and Directs

The light shines the way for us

The Spirit provides a Godlike Atmosphere when it manifests

When the Spirit comes we experience God, which gives us hope and assurance. It unifies us and blesses us.

11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

Each of these gifts help us to life the life Christ’s wants of us and to help others see Christ in us.

  • From UCB Word for Today

The Bible says, ‘The Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.’ At the beginning of creation God caused a mist to come up from the earth and water the ground. Up until that time there had been no downpour from the heavens. That’s because there was nobody to do the prep work and ‘till the ground’.

There’s a spiritual lesson here! There are things God has planned to do, made provision for, and desires to do – but He won’t until you ‘get into place’ where you can receive what He longs to give you. The blessing is there, safe in God’s keeping. The need is there, persistent in its pain. But the blessing can’t come until your heart is in the right place for God to act. Right now you may be enjoying a ‘mist’, but you know God has more for you. You’ve a frustration that causes you to say, ‘Why am I not further along?’ Rather than blaming people and circumstances, you need to pause, look up, and ask, ‘Lord, are You waiting for me to get into place?’

When you ask that question, be prepared to hear the answer and obey it, even if it means rearranging your priorities and paying the price to receive what God wants you to have. What does He want you to have? Not a mist, but a downpour! He’s willing and ‘able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us’ (Ephesians 3:20 KJV). But first you must ‘get into place’.

  • So How do I receive the Spirit

As the above says we must be ready and prepared and want to receive the Spirit from God

Then we must ask for the Spirit, to be given the gift God wants us to have the gift He knows will be best for us at this time, or to ask for what gift we feel we are in need of.

Jesus said Ask and it will be given to you.

Seek and you will find.

So we need to Ask with faith.

Acts 4

The Believers Pray for Courage

30 Stretch out your hand with healing power; may miraculous signs and wonders be done through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

31 After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.

So if you want the Flowing river, the flood light of the Spirit in you.

Flowing and shinning out then you need to really want it and ask.

Its a free gift to all believers.

So lets ask.
1 Corinthians 12

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now, dear brothers and sisters,[a] regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. 2 You know that when you were still pagans, you were led astray and swept along in worshiping speechless idols. 3 So I want you to know that no one speaking by the Spirit of God will curse Jesus, and no one can say Jesus is Lord, except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. 5 There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.

7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 8 To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[b]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[c] 9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing.10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[d] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

Galatians 5

Living by the Spirit’s Power

16 So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. 17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions. 18 But when you are directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of Moses.

19 When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,21 envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. 25 Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

John 7:37-39

Jesus Promises Living Water

37 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! 38 Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'” 39 (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)

Romans 8

26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groaning that cannot be expressed in words.
