matthias Today is the Feast of St Matthias, the man chosen to replace Judas as one of the 12 apostles of Jesus. You can read about this in chapter 1 of the Acts of the Apostles. I often wonder what it must have been like for Matthias. He was not a first-choice and did not make the initial squad, as it were. A bit like those footballers who just missed selection for the England World Cup squad but know their time will come if someone is injured or has to drop out for any reason.

Matthias was certainly close to Jesus, an essential requirement for being part of the apostolic band, so he would have been familiar with all that was entailed in carrying the responsibilities of an apostle.
