Such a good thought
At lunch time today I was presiding at the Eucharist in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit at Sheffield Cathedral. The Cathedral nave has just undergone a huge refurbishment and is due to be handed back from the builders very shortly. As we offered up our worship to God we were surrounded by the busy sounds of the contractors and our amazing team of vergers racing against the clock to get the Cathedral ready for this evening’s Maundy Thursday liturgy.
I found myself reflecting on the fact that the final, momentous days of Jesus’ earthly life, which we commemorate in this Holy Week, were spent in the midst of the hustle and bustle of a Jerusalem full of pilgrims. While opportunities for stillness and quiet should not be missed – such times can be deep wells of spiritual refreshment – it is in the middle of all the noise of life that, for most of the time…
