Sometimes it can be difficult to switch off from the varied demands that life places upon us but it is important that we do this. None of us can keep going – and keep well – without a break. This lies at the heart of the Biblical understanding of ‘Sabbath’. The notion of a day of rest, when things are put down for a while, is important for human wellbeing. For religious people such as Christians, Jews and Muslims, religious observance will be part of this day.

In our 24/7 world a day set apart is increasingly difficult to sustain, but the principle of taking time out, of ‘Sabbath rest’, remains important even if regular full days are not possible.
