A thought on the Prodigal Son’s brother

A really good service this morning, loved being part of praying for people.
However during the talk we looked at the Prodigal son and his brother. This thought came to be while I was listening.

the Younger brother went off with his share of the inheritance and wasted it but his brother stayed at home and worked. this made him resentful and bitter particularly when his brother came home again having lost everything.

The elder brother also had his share of the family inheritance but never chose to use any of it. He just worked and worked for his father and never asked or used the gifts he had been given. this just made me think of the many people who are in church working away getting worn out but thinking they have to do it because that is what there father wants. they then get very bitter when new people arrive or old ones return and get welcomed in. However they have missed the point, they need to stop working and enjoy being with Jesus as well.

Luke 10 – Martha opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

many of us need to spend time as a Mary instead of a Martha or older brother and spend time at the Feet of Jesus. That is where disciples where found in ancient  Israel and Greece.

So, much like many of us, the brother had access to these wonderful gifts from God all had to do was to ask and then use them.

Luke 15- 31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’”
Don’t be like the elder son bitter and worn out resentful of the one who comes back and asks. Take hold of the gifts God in His grace has for you, enjoy your life with Jesus. Be filled with the gifts of the Spirit..

  1. This is an often missed truth in that passage Chris and as you say so important. Funnily enough we had the prodigal son today in Church (I was doing the talk) and we touched on a similar thing. Others had words and pictures about the same thing. Elder brother mentality is not good for evangelism is it?

  2. Lynda isn’t that such an amassing God thing having it in different places. WE have just started a series on what does a disciple of Jesus look like today. You are right Elder brothers is not a good thing for evangelism.
